KNOW MORE ABOUT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

General Fractures

Orthopaedics, though deals with the entire Skeletal System and all its pathologies, the common notion in general is that it deals with fractures of the bones!

The most common fractures are the fractures of the long bones like Femur (thigh bone), Tibia (leg bone), Humerus (arm) and Radius & Ulna (forearm bones). There are several other bones in body including the vertebrae in Spine which can also get injured causing pain and disability.

For the sake of simplification below are a list of most common fractures that are routinely seen in Orthopaedics.

  • Clavicle Fractures
  • Surgical Neck of Humerus
  • Humerus Shaft fractures
  • Both bones Forearm fractures
  • Wrist Fractures
  • Hip Fractures (Intra-capsular and Extra Capsular)
  • Femur Shaft Fractures
  • Tibial Shaft Fractures
  • Both bones of Leg Fractures
  • Ankle Fractures

Below are some of the not so common fractures. But are often seen in high velocity / fall from height /  grievous injuries.

  • Scapula Fractures
  • Thoracic Rib cage Fractures
  • Pelvis and Acetabulum Fractures
  • Spine (Vertebral) Fractures
  • Calcaneal Fractures (Heel Fractures)
  • Crush injuries of the Hand and Foot.

The main purpose of fracture fixation is to restore the normal anatomy and the normal functionality of the limb at the earliest possible to it's previous level of functioning.

This can be achieved by several methods  and surgery is just one option! There are other non surgical options in Conservative Management like Splint / Cast, Sling or even a simple Crepe Support too!

You should always discuss with your Orthopedist as to what your options are and the pros and cons of each one of those options and then come to an informed decision with the help of your Orthopedist.
